Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Develop an understanding of the historical evolution of play. Learn about the contributions that play makes to children’s development, gain familiarity with the play behaviors of young children with special needs, and examine the roles of teach and parents in play.

Learning Goals:   Performance OutcomesBased on the six goals of the Conceptual Framework:1. Scholarship• Understand and critique classic and contemporary theories of play.• Understand how play changes as children grow.• Understand the contributions that play makes to children’s development.• Examine the role of observation as a tool to understand play.• Analyze the role of the teacher in children’s play.• Analyze the role of the parents/caregivers in children’s play.• Examine play in children with special needs.• Understand the value of different play materials and play spaces.2. Reflective Practice• Reflect and reconstruct experiences related to children’s play.• Analyze and reflect on observations and direct experiences with different aspects of play.• Analyze, reflect and critique a specific play space and play materials.3. Social Justice• Understand the impact of culture, gender, and disability on children’s play.4. Inclusive Community• Understand the different skills, abilities, linguistic, and cultural characteristics that can be observed during play.5. Wellness• Respect for children first as unique human beings.• Value play as a source of social-emotional development.• The ability to foster cultural understanding, safety, and emotional well being, positive social interactions, and active engagement among children through play.6. Creativity and the Arts• Use creative expression and personal perspective to design, develop and present a children’s toy or game that integrates fundamental issues of child development and play.• Apply creativity, critical thinking, and cognitive development in all the course requirements.
