Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Understand the development of mathematical thinking and problem-solving competencies in young children. Emphasis is on planning instruction that promotes achievement in all children; leads toward an understanding of what students know and need to learn; incorporates different assessment methods; and incorporates technology to enhance students’ learning.

Learning Goals:   Performance OutcomesBased on the six goals of the Conceptual Framework:1. Scholarship• To acquaint future early childhood educators with current math teaching methods for young children.• To understand and discuss specific math content and methods of presentation.• To gain familiarity with observation procedures that can be used in early childhood settings.• To examine the role and importance of observation, experimentation, and reflection as tools to understanding and learning.2. Reflective Practice• To analyze and reflect on observations and direct experiences of students.• To utilize fieldwork experience as a support area to bridge theory and application of math methods and lessons.• To analyze, utilize, and understand a hands-on approach to the teaching of math.• To foster a life-long love of learning through observation, reflection, experimentation, and application.3. Social Justice• To understand the effects of race, class, culture, gender, economic disadvantage and disability on child development.4. Inclusive Community• To understand the different skills, abilities, linguistic, and cultural characteristics of children.• To analyze the impact different aspects of family, school, and culture have on the development and growth of children.5. Wellness• To foster respect for each individual as a vital part of our society.• To promote cultural understanding, safety and emotional well-being, positive social interactions and active engagement in a non-threatening, safe environment.• To imbue in each individual confidence, a sense of pride and self-worth as an ongoing, life-long goal.6. Creativity and the Arts• To creatively understand, refine, and adapt techniques for individual skills development.• To apply creativity, critical thinking, and cognitive development in all the course requirements.• To appreciate the artistic beauty of the world through scientific observations and investigations.
