Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Introductory knowledge base and skills necessary to teach students with disabilities. Field experiences required. Meets New York State mandate on training the needs of children with autism. (Learning Goals: )

Learning Goals:   School of Education Core Values and Intended Course OutcomesScholarship:1. Through the completion of the Wheelchair Reaction paper students will demonstrate their ability to identify and discuss the impact of federal legislation on teaching physical education to students with disabilities students (students with disabilities). (NCATE/NASPE Code 1.5).2. Through Reflective Journals and Wheelchair Reaction paper students will demonstrate the ability to express themselves in a variety of modes and styles.Reflective Practice:1. Through the completion of the wheelchair experience and reaction paper candidates will be able to demonstrate professional/personal predispositions (self-awareness, empathy, and critical consciousness) with respect to individuals with disabilities.2. Through their Reflective Journal entries candidates will demonstrate professional/personal dispositions insight into and the impact on students’ with disabilities learning and well being.3. Through the development of Individual Educational Plan goals and activities specific to one child’s present level of performance (PLP) the candidate will demonstrate reflective practice in action; writing a annual goal and design creative activities specifically created to meet the goals as stated in the IEP. 4. The candidate will demonstrate reflective practice in action through applying knowledge of the characteristics, considerations, and movement abilities of common impairments to modify games/activities and meet the needs, limitations, and capacities of students with disabilities.Social Justice: 1. Through their Reflective Journal entries candidates will demonstrate how they can be advocates for students with disabilities in their school and in the community. 2. Through their Reflective Journal entries candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the importance for making appropriate provisions for students with individual differences.3. Through their Reflective Journal entries candidates will demonstrate the ability to describe societal and personal changes in attitudes towards individuals with disabilities. Inclusive Community:1. Through their Reflective Journal entries candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the premise of inclusion philosophy and the impact on teaching physical education to students with disabilities.
