Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Analysis of effective instructional techniques and aids. An examination of models and tools for the behavioral analysis of teaching and their application to physical education. Includes experiences in observing, recording, describing, and analyzing the teaching act.

Learning Goals:   Through class participation and selected readings, the student will be able to read and discuss current professional literature, research, policies, trends and issues that influence the design and delivery of physical education and physical activity programs in schools. Through observation, document analysis, and interview, students will be able to describe and analyze characteristics of an established physical education program. Students will be able to evaluate observed teaching based on stated criteria. They will be able to articulate specific goals appropriate for the teaching context and identify recommended instructional approaches to meet those goals. Students will begin to recognize the impact of culture, gender, ability and economic differences on physical education and physical activity programs and teaching. Students will analyze the impact of culture, gender, ability, and economic status in their own histories and articulate their current perspectives regarding physical education, sport and physical activity in schools.Students will be able to identify pedagogical approaches that address needs of students in different circumstances. Students will begin to develop written instructional plans that include all students, and identify ways to differentiate instruction to provide success for all.Students will be able to identify safety hazards in physical activity environments, and to describe ways to promote physical and emotional safety in physical activity settings. They will be able to assess healthy group interaction and strategies to reinforce cooperative behavior and promote good character. They will be able to recognize health enhancing, developmentally appropriate physical activities for various members of groups or populations.
