Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

Students will develop skills in American Sign Language (ASL) by signing the lyrics of songs that comprise ASL literature. Analyses of the meaning of the lyrics will facilitate an understanding of the culture, values and heritage the Deaf community. (Distribution Reqs:Arts)

Learning Goals:   1.To explore the grammatical rules of ASL. 2. Learn to process the meanings and concepts of words, to be able to perform a song in ASL. 3. Develop a keen understanding of the visual, spatial, and gestural aspects of ASL. 4. Improve your ability to sign conceptually versus literally. 5. Develop a cultural and global awareness of difference and diversity and of the people who use Sign Language. 6. Understand what is meant by visual literature.
