Description:

This is an intensive study of articulation and phonological development and disorders in children. Emphasis will be on assessment and intervention along with identification of language differences in assessment with diverse populations. Special topics will include the role of phonological awareness skills in literacy acquisition and childhood apraxia of speech.

Learning Goals:   LEARNER OBJECTIVES/PERFORMANCE OUTCOMES: This course is designed to meet formal competencies as outlined in 2008 KASA standards of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Specifically, this course will attend to the competencies of “knowledge”, “assessment”, “skills” and “intervention”. You will be assessed according to your performance across the stated learner objectives. These learner objectives also fulfill the philosophical requirements of NCATE as the CSD Department is within Adelphi University’s School of Education. This includes six core values we strive to impart to our students through classroom and clinical experiences. They are “scholarship”, “reflective practice”, “social justice”, “inclusive community”, “wellness” and “creativity/the arts”.
