Detailed study of the anatomy and physiology of the peripheral speech mechanism; basic neurology; and the neurological bases of speech and language disorders (e.g., dysphagia, dysarthria) of adults and children. |
Learning Goals: |
PERFORMANCE OUTCOME: Students will be able to• Understand the anatomical/physiological terms in relation to respiration, phonation, articulation/resonation and neuroscience • Understand the organization and function of the different regions of the nervous system with a focus on their relations to communication (ASHA III-B: knowledge of basic human communication and swallowing processes—assessed by labeling of drawings and exam grade)• Understand the processes of speech/language by integrating knowledge of anatomy/physiology of the respiratory, phonatory, and articulatory/resonatory, and nervous systems. (ASHA III-B: knowledge of basic human communication and swallowing processes—assessed by labeling of drawings and exam grade)• Apply the knowledge of normal/abnormal neuroanatomy/neurophysiology in the analysis of communicative disorders (ASHA III-C: knowledge of the disorder– assessed by grade on exam). *The learning goals displayed here are those for one section of this course as offered in a recent semester, and are provided for the purpose of information only.
