Description: |
An understanding of the development of motor functions of typical/atypical infants and young children as a framework for evaluating children with feeding/ pre-speech/speech disorders (e.g., Down syndrome, cerebral palsy). Focus on the birth to three population. Principles and strategies for treatment (e.g., oromotor integrity, team approach) will be discussed. |

PERFORMANCE OUTCOMES Upon completion of this course, students will demonstrate : 1. understanding of the nature of oral-motor functioning (swallowing), its assessment and treatment (ASHA III-C : knowledge of the disorder – assessed by course grade)2. competency in assessing swallowing, feeding and early sound production in young children (ASHA III-D : principles of assessment & IV-G : assessment skills – assessed by midterm)3. ability to plan and implement therapeutic techniques for children with feeding disorders and oral-motor dysfunction (ASHA III-D : principles of intervention; IV-G2 : intervention skills – assessed by final) *The learning goals displayed here are those for one section of this course as offered in a recent semester, and are provided for the purpose of information only.
