Courses may be offered in one of the following modalities:

  • Traditional in-person courses (0–29 percent of coursework is delivered online, the majority being offered in person.)
  • Hybrid/blended courses (30–79 percent of coursework is delivered online.)
  • Online courses (100 percent of coursework is delivered online, either synchronously on a designated day and time or asynchronously as a deadline-driven course.)
  • Hyflex (Students will be assigned to attend in-person or live streamed sessions as a reduced-size cohort on a rotating basis; live sessions are also recorded, offering students the option to participate synchronously or view asynchronously as needed.)

If you are enrolled in courses delivered in traditional or hybrid modalities, you will be expected to attend face-to-face instruction as scheduled.

Description:

This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct effective audiologic counseling to patients and their families/caregivers based on individual patient need and cultural sensitivity. Counseling techniques will be tailored to specific audiologic diagnoses and services.

Learning Goals:   Performance OutcomesAt the end of the course, students will be able to:1. establish counseling goals for patients and their families/caregivers based on: o assessment of individual patient’s needs o evaluation procedures, diagnosis and results of evaluationso treatment optionso communication problems experienced secondary to hearing disorderso effects of hearing and balance disorders on psychosocial and behavioral adjustment including interpersonal relationships, social activities, and occupational options and performanceo affective/emotional reactions to auditory, vestibular, or other related disorders2. outline counseling services for each patient using culturally and linguistically appropriate language3. define problem-solving skills and compensatory behaviors of patients and their families/caregivers based on individual patient need and cultural sensitivity.4. outline the development and coordination of self-help and support groups5. identify appropriate referral to and consultation with appropriate professionals and nonprofessionals as needed6. demonstrate the ability of basic counseling and interviewing skills
